Flat-sided oval tube
A stronger, space-saving, easy-to-install alternative to circular tube and box section — for OEM, industrial and architectural use.
Flat-sided oval (FSO) tube is a structurally efficient hollow section with two parallel flat faces. It is easier to fix, fabricate and integrate than standard circular tube, without the visual weight of box section.
Available in over 45 standard sizes plus multiple wall thicknesses, with flexible custom sizing. Formed from stainless steel (304L and 316L), aluminium (5083, 6062 and 6063), brass and mild steel / ERW.

A highly versatile non-circular tube for easy manufacture and design
This popular tube profile is used across OEM product design, transport interiors, machinery, urban architecture and handrails, and is increasingly specified by engineers and architects who require a high-performance tube with clean aesthetics.
Flexible sizing and low MOQs
We can often custom-form FSO in new dimensions without the need for new tooling, and we have a low minimum order quantity of just 1 length (typically 5.7m). This allows you to evaluate and design-in flat-sided oval tube specific to your prioject without committing to full production.
Flat-sided tube is also referred to as racetrack tube, stadium section tube, flattened oval tube, oval flattened tube, discorectangle tube, obround tube, capsule tube, pill-shaped tube and super-ellipse section.

Easier integratation with fixings and components
Flat-sided oval tube simplifies architectural fabrication and OEM assembly by providing two parallel flat faces for direct mounting of brackets, sensors and other components. Unlike round tube, it typically requires no saddles, shims or machined seats, reducing component count, simplifying fabrication and lowering assembly costs. Its slim profile also makes it ideal where space is limited and box section would be too bulky.
Fewer fixings also makes it a hygienic, easy-to-clean material for racks, equipment frames and support structures in industrial settings.
Space-efficient conduit for cables and components
Flat-sided oval tube provides a practical hollow section for cable management, threaded inserts, internal sleeves and concealed LED lighting. The flat faces allow straightforward integration with housings and fabricated assemblies; the flush surface can be laser cut to accommodate control boxes, access panels and other integrated components.
Its reduced depth keeps overall assembly dimensions compact. This smaller footprint is useful when used inside equipment and machinery, as well as for display, retail, laboratory and transport applications.
It is a popular automotive tube due to the clearance space it offers when used in exhaust systems. See our FSO tube sizes for exhaust tubes.

FSO tube is specifically optimised for loads applied along its major axis, with the narrow minor axis curve at the top and the flat sides running vertically.
Superior deflection strength
FSO tube has been proven to be significantly stronger than equivalent round tube in independent deflection tests when oriented with weight bearing down on the minor axis. Its geometry makes it ideally suited to load bearing applications such as hanging rails in retail or for use as furniture tube. Because the FSO tube resists bending so effectively in the load direction, it can span greater distances between brackets before deflection becomes visible. This means fewer support points, cleaner aesthetics, and reduced installation cost.
It also means less material is needed to achieve the same strength, which reduces material costs.
Find out about our independent load-bearing tests for our 48 × 21 × 1.5 mm stainless steel FSO tube, which showed 54% greater strength than its round tube of equivalent mass (OD 38.1 mm).
Timeless Tube form a robust stainless steel alternative to 30 x 15mm flat-sided oval which is a commonly used size for wardrobes, hanging rails and emergency exit door handles.
Excellent ergonomics for enhanced safety and accessibility
More ergonomic than angular box section and less prone to rotating in the hand than circular tube, FSO is ideal for handrails, grab rails and handles. Its softer geometry also creates a more refined appearance, making it a popular choice for balustrades, gate frames, louvre frames, retail interiors and other architectural metalwork where aesthetics and functionality are equally important.
Larger versions of our flat-sided profile can serve as an attractive shrouding for anti-terrorist bollards or structural supports. The slimline profile is less obstructive than circular posts, helping to improve accessibility and allow for efficient flow of people in public environments.

Stainless steel (INOX) flat-sided oval tubes for low-maintenance and durability
Flat-sided oval tubes are most commonly formed from stainless steel 304L and 316L. These grades are extremely durable and have high corrosion resistance, making them perfect for external fittings such as handrail and architectural metalwork. When manufactured from stainless steel 316L the tube provides the corrosion resistance and low-maintenance required in high-use public transport environments and demanding marine applications.
316L stainless flat-sided oval tube is used in food processing, pharmaceutical and laboratory environments where structural members must meet hygiene requirements. The smooth, radiused profile is easier to clean than box section, with a flat face that allows for simplified fixings on equipment and frames, which means fewer crevices for dirt to reside.
For decorative or restorative applications, we can also create flat-sided oval tubing from copper, brass, bronze and aluminium.

Flat-sided oval tube sizes
Stainless steel and aluminium 5083 Flat-sided oval tube profiles are sold in lengths of 5.7m (the manufacturing process reduces the standard 6m length by 0.3 metres).

Tolerances for flat-sided oval tube
Timeless Tube does not manufacture to a published dimensional tolerance standard for formed profiles. Our typical tolerances are based on the tolerances of the starting round tube, which is generally supplied to EN ISO 1127 (typically D3/T3) for stainless steel and the relevant parts of BS EN 755 for aluminium. Because our products are bespoke cold-formed tubes, achievable tolerances vary according to the profile, size and wall thickness.
Where specific tolerances are critical, please contact us. We maintain an extensive database of actual measured dimensions from previous production runs, enabling us to provide realistic, evidence-based guidance on the tolerances that can typically be achieved for many profile sizes and geometries.
As a general guide please see the tolerance range given according to the major axis.
Standard Tolerances according to Major Axis Range
8–18mm ±0.3 mm
18–30mm ±0.5 mm
30–50mm ±0.6 mm
50–70mm ±0.7 mm
70–120mm ±1.2 mm
120–200mm ±2.0 mm
200–350mm ±3.0 mm
If your application requires the tube to fit inside another component or tube, house an internal part, or meet a specific close-fit dimensional tolerance, please advise us when you first enquire. Any variation in wall thickness could be critical in these assemblies.
If required, we can request wall thickness tolerances from our metal suppliers. Wall thickness tolerances are typically minimal and do not affect fabrication or end application in most standard use cases.
If you would like to know about tolerances for custom-made sizes please visit our guide to new sizes.

How Flat-Sided Oval Tube Compares to Other Materials
Cutting, Welding and Bending: How to Fabricate Flat-Sided Oval Tube
Flat-sided oval tube cuts, welds and finishes using the same methods as standard circular or box section tube. Standard cold saws, bandsaws and laser cutters handle it cleanly, and welding requires no specialist technique beyond adapting fixturing for the profile shape.
If you're working with FSO tube for the first time, we're happy to advise on holding and clamping approaches for your setup. Samples are available so you can test before committing to a project quantity. Our team offer further fabrication for our flat-sided oval tubing for various applications, with services inclduing flaring and welding.
Bending services for FSO
We can bend flat-sided oval tube in selected sizes, and our capability in this area continues to grow. FSO tube can be bent in both the easy-way and hard-way planes using specialist tooling. Contact us with your size, wall thickness and required radius to confirm feasibility before specifying.
Note: If bending is critical to your application, confirm availability with us early in the design process.
