Our carefully controlled deflection tests have shown that our flat-sided oval tubing is up to 54% stronger than standard round steel tubing. Along with our radius square profile, these are some of the toughest metal tubes on the market and a highly advantageous option for all architects and designers.
Flat-sided tubing is easier to fabricate and maintain
You may have seen our flat-sided oval tubing in the handrail at the top of the iconic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. These profiles have a flat side which makes them easy to secure to other elements, so they’re a popular choice in architectural designs. The rounded edge also offers simple maintenance, so flat-sided oval tubing is often used in the medical and manufacturing industries. Water and dirt washes easily from the contoured profile, so it’s simple to maintain and clean.
Stainless steel (INOX) and other metals
Flat-sided oval tubes are most commonly formed from stainless steel 304L and 316L. These grades are extremely durable and have high corrosion resistance, making them perfect for external fittings such as boat railings and metal handrails. For decorative or restorative applications, we can also create flat-sided oval tubing from copper, brass, bronze and aluminium.
Joiners available for connecting D-shaped tube
We offer a joining system for some of our most popular-sized D-shaped tubes. The stainless steel joiners enable you to produce handrail and balustrades with uncompromising, seamless joins. If we don’t yet make joiners in the size you require, speak to the team as we can custom-make sizes.
Sizes
Stainless steel and aluminium 5083 Flat-sided oval tube profiles are sold in lengths of 5.8m (the manufacturing process reduces the standard 6m length by 0.2 metres).

Tolerances
If required, we can find out wall thickness tolerances from our metal suppliers. Typically the tolerance levels of wall thickness are extremely minimal and any small variations in thickness do not affect further fabrication or the end application. However, it is important to tell us if the tolerance is critical to the application before you place an order. For example, if the shaped tubing component needs to go inside another component, or if the tubing has to house a component, any variation in wall thickness could be critical.

The slim profile of our flat-sided oval tube is becoming increasingly popular with design engineers, who are able to improve their product design by using this flattened shape. It is ideal for automotive applications such as exhausts and engines, which require a compact profile for clearance reasons. It can neatly house cabling and electronics. The flat side can be used to mount other components.
We offer this shape in a wide range of sizes, but if we do not make the tube in a size you require then please ask because we can customise our tooling to make new sizes. If you need a prototype or a small run of flat-sided tubing, our minimum order quantity is just 1 length.
