US architects specify accessible handrail in Manhattan government HQ

Designed for every hand
Timeless Tube love to play a part in projects that make a difference to users’ experience of a product or a place.
This New York architectural project is an example of inclusive design at its best. US architectural practice GKV Architects designed the refit of a 22-storey building to be used as a government agency headquarters in Manhattan.
Used daily by families, the space needed to feel welcoming — from the lobby to the top floor. Even the handrail became a design opportunity.
To help children feel secure and independent on the stairs, GKV specified a second, smaller oval handrail, perfectly proportioned for smaller hands, running parallel to the adult-height rail. This was installed at a lower height more suited for children.
Where handrail can be an afterthought, this detail was considered at least two years before completion of the refit. The handrail was not value-engineered out — it was integral to the building’s inclusive design story.
Elliptical rails with complementing ratios
Timeless Tube were asked to form two distinct oval tube sizes to deliver the architects' vision — our tactile 47 x 25mm oval tube, which was beautifully balanced with a smaller elliptical handrail measuring 32 x 16mm. The 47 x 25mm elliptical tube profiles were supplied with cast stainless steel joiners for both planes, which helped to enable easier horizontal and vertical joining.
Both stainless steel oval tube profiles were finished with a contemporary brushed grain.

Inclusive design considered from the outset
Tom McMillan, Timeless MD comments: “As access and inclusion become embedded in global building standards, handrail design should not be a detail that is added later. It is especially heartening to be involved in projects that enable accessibility: especially when built environment professionals such a GKV Architects embed inclusion into design practices from the beginning.”
On this occasion the architects knew exactly what they required, and approached Timeless Tube with a clear vision. In other instances Timeless Tube work with architects and fabricators to help them integrate bespoke, accessible handrail solutions that meet compliance, enhance safety, and elevate design.
Tom Mc Millan adds, “Handrail shape and size affects graspability. In this instance, the placement of one rail was not sufficient in catering for the users. A smaller, lower rail was required. Circular rails do not enable the best grip, which is a key reason why elliptical or D-shaped railings are chosen”.
